The Hotel Menzies originated from a prefabricated tin shed brought from England. Archibald and Catherine Menzies set sail from Liverpool arriving in Port Melbourne some three months later. Early the following year they opened Melbourne's first Menzies Hotel in Latrobe Street. Comfortable accommodation was not considered exhorbitant at the equivalent of $7.25 per week. Thousands of square miles and millions of sheep changed hands in the Commercial Room. In 1969 the original hotel was demolished to make way for yet a grander Menzies Hotel.
