Favourite quotes from books

A few months ago I did a post about the favourite first lines of favourite books. However lots of people love quoting from the meat of the book itself. With the rise of social media, we begin to see more and more quotes bandied about on pretty backgrounds. Sometimes these quotes might leave you cold, or even have you scoff out loud at the syrupy sweet message. This might be because you’re just not in the right mood to hear the message or it simply has no bearing on your life. On the other hand, sometimes having a quote hanging on a wall can bring back the memories of reading that book and all the wisdom you took from the first, second or sixth time you read it. And that to me is the truly great thing about quotes - the memories. Of the moment you had a realisation from reading the book, or the instant it made sense in a large way of the world.

So since I write this post, I would like to indulge in some vanity for a moment and make these quotes all about what is near and dear to me. There are various authors, various genres and various emotions raised by each of them. A couple are purely there because each and every time I read them, I giggle. They're in no particular order but the order in which I rediscovered them for writing this post.

‘Of course, it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?’

- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling

“We accept the love we think we deserve.”

- The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

“I haven’t the slightest idea how to change people, but still I keep a long list of prospective candidates just in case I should ever figure it out.”

- Naked by David Sedaris

“Picking five favourite books is like picking the five body parts you'd most like not to lose.”

- Neil Gaiman

'When you are imagining, you might as well imagine something worth while.’

- Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery

“There is any amount of love and good in the world, but you must search for it.”

- My Brilliant Career by Miles Franklin

“Someone had said that if you thought about the unthinkable long enough it became quite reasonable.”

- Brat Farrar by Josephine Tey

“It's against my principles to buy a book I haven't read, it's like buying a dress you haven't tried on.”

- 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff

'Or maybe you’ve thrown caution to the wind and you’re lying on the bookshop floor having a little breather (if that’s the case, I’m not being rude, but you’re a bit weird).'

- Is It Just Me? by Miranda Hart
